What We Are Doing

Community Collaborations

The council regularly collaborates with various schools, community groups and events to engage residents in climate action and awareness.

This includes organising school events and competitions, community tree-planting events, stalls, workshops and more. As a council, we hope to continue working alongside our community, to improve understanding of climate challenges and how we can face them together!

Get in touch by email to climatechange@chorley.gov.uk if you would like to work with our climate change team!

Chorley's Wild weekend

The Council held a community climate change event, opened by Sir Lindsay Hoyle, to engage residents with nature, wildlife and sustainability. The event included flower and vegetable planting, a Bioblitz to explore local wildlife, a smoothie bike, education for EV's and renewable energy, wildlife charity tombolas and zero-waste stalls, as well as delicious vegan food and live music from Chris Healey!

School and Community Bioblitz

Schools and residents across the borough were invited to take part in the Astley Park Bioblitz taking place as a part of Chorley's Wild weekend. The weekend saw the identification of 45 species with over 67 observers, contributing to a national database. This was a wonderful opportunity to engage with and immerse in nature, supported by expert ecologists!

Climate Change Education

The Council's climate change team have been visitng school's throughout the borough to lead lessons, workshops and assemblies for both priamry and secondary pupils, engaging them in all things cliamate change. These visits have been an opportunity for young people to take part in interactive lessons involving games and crafts, to learn about the environment, climate and sustainability.

Teachers Eco Network

We have also created a Teachers Eco Network to encourage schools to connect and collaborate in their climate change projects. These meetings will allow schools to share what they have been doing for climate action and to inspire and motivate one another.

School Art Competition

In 2022, we held a schools art competition focussed on recycling and creating a greener planet. Students were encouraged to produce an art piece to inspire recycling for a cleaner planet, with the 2 winning art pieces to be displayed on Chorley’s local bin wagons. The winning art pieces were produced from Balshaw Lane primary school, and St Chad’s Whittle-le-woods primary school.

School Debate

In 2021, we held a Climate Debate at Chorley Town Hall, chaired by Rt. Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP. This event provided a fantastic platform and opportunity for the students of Chorley to voice their views on climate change. Students were able to get involved and engage with local decision-making processes.

We hope to organise another school climate debate in the future.
