At Home

  • Rather than switching on your heating straight away, use a blanket to limit energy cost and usage
  • Cook smart – limit your food waste, shop seasonal and local foods to reduce carbon emissions from food transport, and repurpose your left-overs
  • If you’re not using it – switch it off to save electricity! You can also switch to energy-efficient appliances with LED bulbs or low energy lights. Visit Greener Homes for more tips on energy cost efficiency at home
  • Eat less meat where you can and make a conscious shift towards lower-carbon foods. Reducing your intake of meat and dairy is good for your health, and will help to reduce your carbon footprint

On the Go

  • Walk or cycle where you can, to improve your health and reduce carbon emissions produced by your car. You can even consider switching to an electric car
  • Don’t use plastic straws - instead, use paper or a carry a reusable straw with you
  • Carry a reusable coffee cup! Some shops even provide discount for using your own cup, such as Greggs and Costa
  • Use public transport where you can - this will decrease the number of vehicles on the road and limit carbon emissions
  • Carry a reusable water bottle with you to avoid buying plastic bottles
  • Take packed lunches made at home in reusable containers to avoid buying single serve meals with plastic packaging

When Shopping

  • Avoid excessive food packaging - choose glass and tin packaging over plastic packaging where possible! Local farm shops or markets often have loose fruit and vegetables to allow you to shop more sustainably
  • Carry reusable shopping bags with you rather than buying plastic bags at every food shop
  • Use local refill shops to replenish your shampoo, conditioner, cleaning products and food to reuse old bottles.
  • Have your milk delivered from a local farm, as it is often locally sourced and arrives in reusable glass bottles
  • Avoid disposable cutlery wherever possible
  • Have less / give up chewing gum, as it’s made from synthetic rubber which is a form of plastic!
  • Try using reusable cloth nappies for you baby, which can also save you a lot of money!
  • Reuse, repair and regift! Upcycle and fix broken items rather than replacing them, and regift unwanted items or donate them to charity
  • Use a razor with replaceable blades rather than disposable razors
  • Ditch the cling film, instead use foil
  • Try loose leaf tea with a strainer instead of tea bags - as they are sealed with plastic which breaks down into microplastics that you ingest!
  • Use washable / reusable make up remover cloths, rather than single use make up wipes to remove your make up
